Description
Blind Guitarist brings a street musician and his listeners into an open outdoor setting. Francisco de Goya places the guitarist near the center of a varied gathering, with standing figures, children and seated listeners arranged around him. Animals and distant buildings extend the scene beyond the crowd, giving the performance the character of an everyday public encounter.
This etching dates to about 1778. Light, economical lines keep the setting airy while the overlapping figures create a lively rhythm around the musician. Goya gives attention to both the performer and the people drawn toward him, making the image a study of shared attention as much as a depiction of music.
