Description

A blind singer sits with his head lifted and a hand raised, making the act of performance visible through his body. The gesture gives the concentrated figure an expressive reach beyond the immediate setting. Music and vulnerability meet in a person whose presence depends on being heard as well as seen.

Designed late in Goya’s life, the print combines etching, aquatint and other worked marks rather than relying on one uniform kind of line. That varied surface gives the subject a sense of immediacy suited to a brief encounter. The image’s interest lies in the meeting of human limitation and expressive ability, presenting the singer as someone whose presence is defined by an act of making himself heard.
