About Blue Water Lilies
Claude Monet’s Blue Water Lilies (1916–1919) fills the view with the surface of his garden pond at Giverny. Green lily pads and small pale blossoms float among blue and violet reflections, crossed by trailing forms of reflected vegetation. Without a horizon or a separate strip of sky, the water becomes an expansive field of color. Free brushwork lets plants and reflections blend, inviting attention to the movement of paint as well as the garden. The original belongs to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
