Description
Boy with a Pipe by Pablo Picasso portrays an adolescent in blue clothing, holding a pipe in his left hand beneath a crown of flowers. Two painted bouquets frame his head against a warm reddish background. His still posture and distant gaze contrast with the decorative blossoms, giving the portrait a quiet, slightly enigmatic presence.
The work belongs to Picasso’s Rose Period, when performers and other people around his Montmartre studio became subjects of closely observed, poetic images. Sotheby’s catalogue suggests that the boy was probably an adolescent known as P’tit Louis. The floral crown transforms the everyday figure without explaining his thoughts: blue clothing, warm surroundings and the repeated flowers hold the composition together while leaving its emotional meaning open.
