Description

Brandès’s head and hat rise above a patterned diagonal railing in her theater box. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec makes the architectural edge part of a close portrayal, giving the named figure a particular position within a place of spectatorship. The encounter connects face, headwear and surrounding structure, allowing a small area of the theater to hold attention on an individual person.

The 1894 lithograph uses crayon, brush and spatter printed in olive green on wove paper. Its graphic marks give the subject a lasting presence within a restrained color structure. The work’s interest lies in the relationship between individual and setting, where a small area of a theater can become a particular human encounter rather than merely one part of a wider public occasion.
