Description

Bullfight in a Divided Ring by Francisco Goya sets two arena encounters on either side of a strong diagonal barrier. Bulls, fighters and spectators fill the scene, their overlapping gestures creating an atmosphere of restless anticipation.

The divider pulls the eye deep into the crowd while the foreground bull and raised sword bring the danger close. In this scene from the Bulls of Bordeaux, Goya balances the spectacle of the packed arena with the vulnerability of the people within it.
