Description

Bullfight in a Divided Ring fills a broad arena with movement, color and competing points of attention. Francisco de Goya places a long barrier through the center, separating two encounters while drawing the eye from the foreground crowd toward the distant spectators and buildings.

Bulls, mounted riders and figures on foot animate both sides of the ring. Bright touches of red, yellow and blue punctuate the earth-colored arena, while the spacious sky opens above the tightly packed stands. The diagonal division makes the viewer scan back and forth, discovering small gestures and reactions throughout the scene.
