Description
Bust of an Old Man with a Flowing Beard is a 1630 etching by Rembrandt van Rijn. The elderly sitter lowers his head as his long beard falls forward, while the lightly worked left shoulder remains largely unshaded.
Rembrandt concentrates the etched line around the face, hair, and beard, using denser marks to model the features while leaving broad areas of the sheet comparatively open. The restrained setting keeps attention on the bowed head and strongly described beard.
