Description
Cain Killing Abel by Albrecht Dürer places the biblical conflict beneath the branching forms of a large tree. Cain raises a heavy weapon above the fallen Abel, whose body turns across the foreground. The strong opposition between standing attacker and vulnerable figure gives the small composition a direct physical clarity, with the landscape pressing close around them.
Created in 1511, this woodcut uses sharp contours and concentrated shadow to heighten the action. The lifted weapon and curved tree branches draw the eye upward, while the body below anchors the scene in the ground. Dürer keeps the episode closely focused, allowing posture, weight and the decisive interval before the blow to make the tragic encounter immediately legible.
