Description

In Carnot Is Sick!, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec sets a large bowed head near the left foreground beside a darker figure and background at the right. Lighter, loosely stated forms interrupt the blacker areas, giving the image a lively, caricatural surface. The changes of scale make the scene immediate, letting a few concentrated shapes dominate its open and crowded portions.

Dated 1893, the brush and spatter lithograph was printed in black on imitation Japan paper and published by Edouard Kleinmann. Toulouse-Lautrec’s contribution remains distinct from the wider publication, giving the represented design its own graphic presence. The single ink unifies the printed surface while permitting variation in the marks. The work preserves one image under an expressive title, connecting a moment of visual attention with the more elusive implications of words.
