Description
Christ before Annas by Albrecht Dürer sets a restrained central figure against a tightly gathered confrontation. The seated authority occupies one side of the room, while armed men crowd around Christ and a raised arm introduces a note of immediate threat. Tall garments and upright weapons give the small scene a sharp, enclosed rhythm.
Created around 1508 for The Small Passion, the woodcut makes its drama clear through oppositions of posture and gesture. Christ’s relative stillness contrasts with the restless figures around him, while the room’s hard edges reinforce the sense of pressure. Dürer’s strong lines keep the gathering readable without softening its intensity, turning the compact composition into a closely observed encounter between vulnerability and power.
