Description
Christ before Caiaphas by Albrecht Dürer places the accused figure within a crowded, shadowed chamber. Christ stands among armed attendants, facing the seated high priest whose expressive gesture gives the exchange a dramatic focus. Architecture, weapons and gathered robes fill the close space, leaving little visual escape from the confrontation.
Engraved in 1512 for The Passion, this image draws its force from the difference between the standing figure’s restraint and the movement around him. Strong contrasts of light and dark distinguish the principal faces and hands within the gathering. Dürer makes the interior feel dense with attention, turning an episode of judgment into a study of opposing gestures, authority and vulnerable stillness.
