Description
Christ stands among armed guards before an enthroned religious authority in Christ before Caiaphas. One captor gestures insistently toward the seated figure, whose hand draws attention to the exchange. The high seat and heavy canopy establish an unequal confrontation, while the prisoner remains close to the men controlling his movements in the narrow chamber.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut from The Small Passion gives the hearing a vivid physical setting. Armor, robes and raised weapons crowd around the quiet central figure, while a dog rests near the steps below the judge. The mixture of ceremonial authority and ordinary detail makes the scene convincing, with its tension expressed through the close arrangement of bodies rather than an expansive spectacle.
