Description
Christ Carrying the Cross shows Christ struggling beneath the beam as a crowded procession moves out from the city toward the place of execution. The Virgin and other figures follow close behind, while armed men press around the central body. A small dog appears near the foreground, and the distant road opens toward buildings and a bare tree beyond the dense gathering.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut places the weight of the cross at the center of a restless movement of people. Slanting beams, weapons and bending bodies make the procession feel difficult and urgent, while expressions and gestures give individual faces a role within the crowd. The carefully described city and landscape extend the episode beyond the foreground, turning a moment of exhaustion into a story unfolding across an inhabited world.
