Description
Christ Crowned with Thorns shows Christ seated beneath men who press the crown onto his head with long rods. A kneeling tormentor offers a reed, turning gestures of honor into mockery, while other figures look on from the shadowed room. The crowded arrangement brings the hands and implements close to Christ’s bowed face.
Albrecht Dürer’s engraving from The Passion sets the exposed body against the heavy clothing of the surrounding men. Diagonal rods cross the upper space, while the seated figure forms a quieter shape below them. The contrast between restless aggression and restrained endurance gives the episode its emotional force, making a small interior hold a complex encounter of cruelty, humiliation and composure.
