Description
Christ Nailed to the Cross by Albrecht Dürer brings the preparations for the Crucifixion into a densely populated outdoor scene. Christ’s body lies across the lowered cross, while men bend and reach around him and onlookers gather behind. The horizontal form at the center contrasts with the standing figures, making the vulnerability of the body immediately apparent.
Made around 1509 for The Small Passion, this woodcut concentrates its drama in the practical movements of the foreground. Hands, tools and bent backs give the episode a disturbing physical clarity. Dürer’s strong lines organize the crowd without easing its pressure, allowing the viewer to follow the actions while retaining the emotional weight of the central figure’s stillness.
