Description
Christ on the Cross isolates the pale, elongated figure against a dark sky crossed by greenish and yellow storm tones. Outstretched arms follow the brown crossbeam, while the vertical body carries the eye down toward the very low horizon. El Greco gives the Crucifixion an intense contrast between illuminated skin and surrounding darkness, concentrating the scene on the figure rather than on a crowd beneath him.
Painted around 1600–1610 in oil on canvas, the work combines the elongated figure with a graphic account of the Crucifixion. The Cleveland Museum of Art relates the color and proportions to Venetian painting and the depiction of blood to devotional attention toward Christ’s pain. These elements make the image both formally striking and meditative, with the contrast between bodily vulnerability and the surrounding sky sustaining its intensity.
