Description
Cinerary Urn, after the Antique makes a sculpted vessel the center of a carefully organized drawing. Figures flank its square upper section, while leaf forms and a garland ornament the front above the pedestal. The urn’s broad, frontal presence provides a stable framework for those smaller details, inviting the eye to move between the object’s overall shape and the decoration across its surface.
The sheet is attributed to the circle of Nicolas Poussin and dated broadly between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Brown ink and wash over black chalk distinguish the vessel’s edges from its modeled shadows. Its subject belongs to the study of antique forms, where an object associated with burial can also become a source of artistic invention through the arrangement of figures, ornament and supporting architecture.
