Description
Conrad Celtis kneels before Maximilian I, presenting an open book to the seated ruler. An elaborate canopy rises above the encounter, surrounded by leafy ornament and heraldic shields. The central figures remain clearly visible within this decorative setting, giving the exchange the formal character of an offering made under imperial authority.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut marks the presentation of Celtis’s Quatuor Libri Amorum through the meeting of scholarship and power. The book connects the kneeling author to the enthroned recipient, while the surrounding emblems make the setting larger than a private conversation. Fine outlines describe patterned cloth, foliage and the architecture of the canopy. The image combines an intimate act of giving with the visual richness of a ceremonial book illustration.
