Description
In the cover design for Les Vieilles Histoires, a dog at the left shares the image with a walking man in a top hat carrying a cane, while lettering occupies the background. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec brings a particular encounter into the design for Les Vieilles Histoires, allowing figures and text to coexist within one graphic surface. The scene gives the publication a visual introduction rather than a purely typographic announcement.
The 1893 hand-colored lithograph joins a printed design with color applied by hand. That material combination gives the work a character distinct from a lithograph printed entirely in colored inks. The encounter allows image and publication to share attention, inviting the viewer to regard the cover as a particular composition rather than only a practical surface placed before the contents it introduces.
