Description

A tiger crouches facing right, its dark stripe shapes and bent paws giving the gathered body a strong presence against a warm-toned sheet. Eugène Delacroix makes the animal’s compact position the center of attention. The close arrangement allows posture and markings to carry the encounter, giving the creature force without the action of a hunt or an elaborate landscape.

The 1839 drawing uses pen and brush with iron gall ink. The combination brings linear and broader painted marks into the study of an animal, giving the surface more than one means of describing form. Its interest lies in the concentration of attention, where a single creature can carry a powerful presence through posture and drawn observation rather than a dramatic event around it.
