Description

The dead Christ is seated or lowered at the center of a dark print, with angels gathered on either side and large wings rising behind. Manet concentrates the religious subject through the relation between the central body and its attendants. The surrounding figures hold the scene closely, giving its solemn identity a substantial human and graphic presence.

Made in 1866–1867, the work combines etching and aquatint in brown-black ink and represents the third of three states. Henri Guérard is credited as printer, a role distinct from Manet’s authorship of the composition. The two printmaking techniques permit line and tone to share the religious scene, giving it a surface different from an oil painting. Its interest lies in connecting the subject’s solemn identity with the particular material form of a printed impression.
