Description

Drawing of the Clyde shows a waterfall sweeping diagonally through the middle of a landscape enclosed by high wooded cliffs. Small figures occupy the lower foreground, giving the force of the water a human scale without diminishing it. Turner makes the river’s movement the organizing presence of a scene whose steep sides direct attention toward the rushing central passage.

Published on March 29, 1809, the work combines etching and mezzotint. J. M. W. Turner designed and etched the composition, while Charles Turner engraved and published it; this is the third of three states. The printed medium distinguishes the represented design from an original drawing, even though the title preserves that word. The image invites attention to the way a landscape can be translated into line and tone while maintaining the identity of its particular subject.
