Description
Ecce Homo by Albrecht Dürer displays Christ before a gathering of people, his vulnerable body set against steps and the firm structure of the surrounding building. The title Ecce Homo, meaning ‘Behold the Man,’ directs attention to the act of presentation itself. Figures below and beside him create a charged relationship between the exposed individual and those who are invited to judge him.
Within the engraved Passion, the composition uses changes of level to sharpen its dramatic structure. The raised figure and the lower gathering remain connected through faces, hands and lines of sight. Carefully worked shadows give the architectural setting weight, while lighter flesh draws attention back to Christ. The image concentrates on the moral pressure of looking, making the viewer aware of the distance between observing suffering and responding to it.
