Description
In the Elles cover design, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec places a woman with her back turned at the right. Her dark long skirt gives the figure weight as her hands rise toward her head. A dropped top hat appears near the lower left beside pale bedclothes, connecting the standing body with a small arrangement of personal objects and fabric.
Dated 1896, this version uses crayon, brush and spatter lithography printed in three colors on wove paper. Gustave Pellet published the portfolio, while Toulouse-Lautrec supplied its design. The cover’s separate identity matters: it is one represented image associated with a series, rather than a view of every plate within it. The work joins pictorial interest with the practical form of a printed publication, allowing an introductory design to have its own lasting presence.
