Description

A teal-clad woman and pale bedding occupy Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Elles poster, with pink lettering below connecting the image to its public role. The domestic subject becomes an outward introduction to an exhibition rather than a distant grand spectacle. Strong neighboring color areas give an everyday scene a memorable printed presence while preserving the figure’s human interest.

Made in 1896, the lithograph uses crayon, brush and spatter and is printed in four colors on beige wove paper. This is the poster form for the exhibition at La Plume, distinguishing it from the portfolio cover associated with the same design. Toulouse-Lautrec connects visual invention to public communication without making the image merely incidental. Its interest lies in that double role, where a subject from everyday life becomes the introduction to a larger artistic occasion.
