Description
Pilate Washing His Hands shows a seated official holding his hands over a basin as a servant pours water from a jug. At the right, Christ stands among armed guards. Steps and columns divide the crowded interior, setting the quiet act of handwashing against the prisoner’s impending removal.
The image translates Dürer’s narrative design into the finely worked lines of engraving. Closely spaced marks distinguish fabric, bodies and the surrounding setting, keeping the story vivid at a small scale. This later interpretation preserves the direct emotional appeal of the composition while remaining a work after Dürer.
