Description
Erasmus of Rotterdam by Albrecht Dürer portrays the humanist scholar absorbed in writing. Erasmus stands at a sloping desk, his eyes lowered toward the page and his hands carefully placed around the pen and paper. Books occupy the foreground, while a small vase of flowers and an inscribed panel lend the room a measured, thoughtful order.
Engraved in 1526, the portrait builds its character through the activity and surroundings of its subject. Dürer contrasts the large folds of Erasmus’s robe with the fine detail of book pages, bindings and writing implements. The result is a portrait of intellectual attention, in which an individual’s face and gesture are inseparable from the quiet world of study around him.
