Description
Three walkers follow a foreground road beneath tall trees in Landscape with Pilgrims at Emmaus. A broad river opens to the left, while distant buildings and cliffs extend the view beyond the travelers’ immediate route. Bruegel’s design gives the biblical journey an expansive setting, allowing its human story to appear within a world whose breadth invites the eye to wander.
Made around 1555–56, the print combines etching and engraving by Johannes and Lucas van Doetecum. Their lines translate Bruegel’s design into a surface that can carry both distant space and nearby detail. The scene’s appeal lies in the relationship between journey and place: the pilgrimage offers a direction, while the wider view allows the eye to wander. A religious subject becomes an opportunity to consider how a significant encounter can unfold within the ordinary breadth of the world.
