Description

Two figures confront one another near buildings and trees, their extended hands turning a simple outdoor meeting into a lively exchange. The contrasting clothing and sharply drawn poses make the encounter feel theatrical, as if the figures have paused between one line of dialogue and the next. This illustration to Terence’s Eunuches gives spoken comedy a compact, physical form.

The image is a nineteenth-century reprint of a woodcut design by Albrecht Dürer. Clear contours organize faces, fabric and the open ground, while the surrounding architecture supplies a recognizable setting without distracting from the exchange. Its interest comes from the relationship between the two bodies: a gesture is offered, considered and answered. The small scene makes conversation visible, showing how narrative can be carried by posture and the space between people.
