Description

A young figure stands near a building with one hand held before the body, the turned head making the pose feel attentive and expectant. The surrounding street opens toward more distant architecture, giving the small scene a clear sense of place. This illustration to Terence’s Eunuchus draws its character from the relationship between a lively stance and the quiet space around it.

A nineteenth-century reprint of a woodcut design by Albrecht Dürer, the image uses firm lines to distinguish clothing, headwear and the hard edges of the buildings. Small stones and plants bring the foreground into the same observed world as the figure. The absence of a crowded gathering lets the posture suggest an ongoing encounter beyond the visible scene. Its theatrical warmth comes from that pause, when attention itself seems to anticipate the next exchange.
