Description
This 1898 exhibition catalogue cover and announcement for a Cézanne show at the Galerie Vollard combines printed information with a substantial relief-print illustration after Paul Cézanne. Bathers gather beneath a canopy of branches within a rectangular image, their standing and seated bodies arranged against the wooded setting. The surrounding cover makes clear that the illustration belongs to an exhibition publication rather than being a separate painted canvas.
The printed image translates the relationship between bodies and trees into a more sharply defined graphic surface. Upright figures carry the eye through the composition, while seated forms give the lower area a different pace. The forest gathers the group without turning it into a clearly narrated event. Made for the exhibition held from May 9 to June 10, 1898, the cover brings Cézanne’s bathing figures into the visual identity of the show.
