Description
Expulsion from Paradise, from the Small Passion, copy depicts Adam and Eve’s departure from Eden. The subject marks a decisive separation between the sheltered world of Paradise and the human life that follows outside it. The Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogs this undated woodcut as after Albrecht Dürer and also names Johann Mommard.
Within the Small Passion sequence, Expulsion from Paradise establishes a consequence of the Fall that gives the later story of redemption its context. The scene’s emotional force lies in loss and departure: a familiar biblical event becomes a moment of irreversible change. The woodcut medium gives the episode a clear graphic presence within a continuing narrative. This copy preserves the subject’s place in Dürer’s sequence while remaining distinct from an original work executed by him.
