Description

Isolated limbs, reclining figures and heads share Eugène Delacroix’s study sheet related to Liberty Leading the People. Gestural marks give the separate observations an immediate working character rather than the resolution of the completed painting. The page invites movement between particular bodies, making preparation tangible through a range of forms considered alongside one another.

Made in 1830, the drawing uses pen and brown ink with brush and brown wash. The materials allow the subject to be considered through line and tone rather than the full color of the later painting. Delacroix’s working image preserves an encounter with artistic preparation. Its appeal lies in looking closely at individual studies whose importance extends beyond themselves, where separate observations can contribute to a more ambitious visual statement without losing their immediate drawn character.
