Description
Camille Pissarro’s Fishmarket looks over a busy square toward waterfront steps and buildings. People cluster across the foreground, their separate forms joining into a lively surface of short, broken strokes. A broad gray sky and large clouds spread above the town, giving the crowded lower picture a more open counterpart. The market’s activity remains readable without each person being isolated from the surrounding movement.
Painted in 1902 in oil on canvas, the view belongs to Pissarro’s series of Dieppe harbor scenes. The Cleveland Museum of Art records that he worked from an upper-level hotel room, a position reflected in the painting’s elevated perspective. The market’s activity and the changing sky remain closely connected, with the handling of steam, clouds and sunlight giving the urban setting a continually shifting visual life.
