Description
Gardanne rises in a compact stack of walls, red roofs, and pale planes beneath an open sky. The church tower crowns the hill, while smaller buildings step downward toward the foreground. Paul Cézanne gives each structure a distinct weight, yet ties them together through repeated angles and touches of warm color.
Painted in 1885–86 near Aix-en-Provence, the scene turns a Provençal town into an absorbing study of spatial order. Blue-gray shadows and ocher masonry create a rhythm across the hillside, allowing the eye to travel between individual houses and the larger shape of the settlement.
