Description
Garroted Man by Francisco de Goya confronts the viewer with a bound, seated figure in a sparse setting. The bound hands, vertical post and close arrangement of the body give the image a stillness that feels both restrained and severe.
Fine lines describe the clothing and face, while the large areas of pale space make the figure seem isolated. A small candle-like form beside the chair intensifies the scene’s quiet, somber atmosphere.
