Description
Goetz von Berlichingen sits at a table on the right, writing among papers while a companion stands at the left. Armor and equipment behind connect the reflective activity with a life of action. Eugène Delacroix gives the named character a particular encounter with recording his memoirs, allowing the practical act of writing to carry the scene’s interest.
Dating to 1836–43, the lithograph gives the subject a continuing printed presence within Delacroix’s response to Goethe’s play. The work’s interest lies in turning a written drama toward the act of writing itself, where a character and a record of his experience meet within one scene. The image encourages sustained attention to that encounter rather than requiring a complete account of the story around it.
