Description
Half-Figure of a Nude Man Facing Left, Head of a Satyr brings two studies together in a drawing from the circle of Peter Paul Rubens. The man’s upper body turns to the left while an arm crosses and extends across the sheet. A separate satyr’s head appears behind him. Black chalk and white highlights give the forms contrasting degrees of emphasis against the gray surface.
The drawing invites attention to how the body’s direction and the head’s character can be explored separately on one surface. Dark and pale marks offer complementary ways to suggest volume without describing a complete surrounding space. The sheet remains a record of concentrated pictorial work, where the study of human form and the invention of a mythological face share the possibilities of chalk.
