Description
A winding road crosses moody hills in Hind Head Hill, designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Robert Dunkarton. A flock occupies the foreground beneath a stormy sky broken by light. The eye follows the route toward the changing weather, connecting an ordinary passage through the landscape with the larger drama of exposed ground and atmosphere.
Published on January 1, 1811, the print combines etching, mezzotint and drypoint. This later state belongs to the printed history of the Liber Studiorum plate rather than a different hill or route. Turner makes ordinary travel part of landscape’s interest, giving the scene a material presence through line and tone. The view offers a close encounter with a place whose significance comes from both its natural forms and the human connections established through a road across them.
