Description
Holy Family with a Dragonfly places Mary and the child near the edge of an open landscape, while Joseph rests nearby and buildings extend beyond them. A small winged insect in the foreground gives Holy Family with a Dragonfly its distinctive title. The quiet domestic group is set against a wider world of water, trees and distant structures, making the scene feel both sheltered and spacious.
Engraved around 1495, the image gives the surrounding landscape unusually rich attention. Fine lines distinguish clothing, ground and architecture, while the relationship between mother and child remains the composition’s warm center. The tiny insect invites a closer look at the details nearest the viewer, echoing the care given to the larger setting. The sacred subject gains intimacy through these observations, bringing devotion into a world alive with small, specific forms.
