Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō IV appears as the monk Mongaku at the center of a three-part theatrical scene. Two companions flank him as the performers hold animated, bent-handed gestures, with small rats visible near their feet. Katsukawa Shunshō links the figures through a lattice fence and sparse branches, giving their pale robes and expressive faces a shared setting.
The 1775 design depicts a moment from Hana-zumo Genji-biki in which the actors imitate a fox dance and react to the animals they have attracted. Shunshō preserves the humor through bodily expression rather than an elaborate narrative background. The repeated gestures make the group coherent while the different faces keep it lively. The print offers a particularly engaging meeting of costume, movement and the unexpected interruptions that can animate a theatrical scene.
