Description
Jan Six reads beside a bright window in this darkly worked portrait by Rembrandt. The standing figure leans near the opening at the upper right, while a low chair occupies the left of the room. The contrast lets the reader emerge from an interior whose shadow remains a substantial part of the image rather than a neutral backdrop.
Dated 1647, the work combines etching, drypoint and burin; this impression is the fifth of five states. Rembrandt connects a named sitter with an absorbed activity, allowing reading and the room’s illumination to shape the portrait together. The figure’s quiet position makes attention itself a visible subject. The print invites the eye to remain with the gradual distinction between the man, the page and the light beside him.
