Description

A Jewish musician sits cross-legged facing the viewer in a hooded cloak, with a rounded object at one side. The Mogador costume named by the subject gives his presentation a particular identity. The print based on Eugène Delacroix’s design concentrates attention on the seated person, allowing clothing and the musician’s direct bodily arrangement to shape the encounter.

The wood engraving appeared in Le Magasin Pittoresque in January 1842. Its newsprint surface gives the subject a material identity connected with publication, carrying the artist’s design into a wider printed form. The image’s interest lies in that concentrated portrayal, where clothing and musical identity become parts of a person’s presentation and where the named setting provides context without overtaking the figure itself.
