Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō IV is the named subject of this actor print by Katsukawa Shunshō. Two figures share the scene, with a larger pale robe marked by round black crests at the left and a narrower figure to the right. A screen and green ground frame their encounter, giving the named actor a counterpart within a wider theatrical arrangement.
Dated to the twelfth month of 1771, the nishiki-e print was produced in ink and color on paper. Its appeal lies in the persistence of a stage identity beyond a live appearance: the performer can be recognized and considered closely in an image. Shunshō preserves an individual connection to kabuki, making the subject a particular actor rather than a general figure of theatrical activity. The work keeps that human association tangible across time.
