Description

A seated, draped woman with long dark hair occupies the center of Le Sourire, a woodcut by Paul Gauguin dated 1899. A crouching figure on the right holds their head in their hands, while animal forms appear to the left. The title, The Smile, gains complexity through these contrasting postures. The central figure’s expression belongs to a setting filled with patterned marks and other presences rather than an isolated portrait.

Carved lines and dark shapes give the image a strongly graphic structure. The surrounding pattern links the figures, yet their different gestures keep them distinct, inviting the viewer to move between ease and withdrawal. Gauguin allows that emotional contrast to remain unresolved instead of supplying a complete explanation. The print’s compact arrangement makes small shifts of posture important, using the woodcut’s direct marks to hold several possible feelings within a single scene.
