Description
Female heads appear above the large central lettering of Ninon de Lenclos Amoureuse. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gives the book a visual introduction through a close grouping rather than an elaborate narrative scene. The monochrome arrangement lets drawn faces and written title answer one another, creating a cover whose human presence remains distinct within its practical role as a publication’s announcement.
The 1898 lithograph on vellum belongs to a second edition published by Mercure de France. Its drawn heads form a light counterweight to the substantial written title, giving the cover two different kinds of emphasis. Toulouse-Lautrec does not need a fully furnished scene to make the design engaging: a few faces and their placement establish a human register within the printed page.
