Description
In Lion Devouring a Horse, Eugène Delacroix compresses the predator and its victim into a dark, closely joined group. The animal forms occupy a compact pictorial space, making contact and overlapping bodies the focus rather than an expansive landscape. The density of the printed marks gives weight to the struggle, leaving the eye to disentangle the two creatures within the encounter.
Dated 1844, the work is a lithograph on chine collé. Delacroix gives the violent subject a force that depends on organization as much as incident: dark masses hold the group together while changing contours reveal the bodies within it. The close view makes the horse’s vulnerability inseparable from the lion’s action. The print preserves an intense animal scene whose drama comes from proximity, contrast and the concentration of energy into a limited area.
