Description
Little Devil’s Bridge spans a narrow chasm with a high stone arch in this print designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Charles Turner. Steep rock faces enclose the crossing, with trees at the left and a bright opening beneath the arch. The Little Devil’s Bridge gains significance through the scale of the land it connects, making a human structure compelling within a powerful natural setting.
Published on March 29, 1809, the etching and mezzotint belongs to Liber Studiorum. The printed view combines linear structure with a worked tonal surface, giving the crossing a material character distinct from a painted scene. The image’s interest lies in the meeting of construction and terrain, where a small human intervention can become important through the larger land it connects. The bridge offers a point of attention within a setting whose presence extends beyond the crossing itself.
