Description
London appears beyond Greenwich Park in a view organized by the Thames and its architecture. The paired cupolas of the Royal Naval College stand near the river, while the dome of Saint Paul’s echoes them farther toward the city. The Queen’s House below the hill adds another architectural form, giving the broad prospect several distinct landmarks.
Published on January 1, 1811, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Charles Turner; this impression is the first of four states. The plate belongs to the architectural landscapes of Liber Studiorum. Its interest lies in making individual buildings part of a continuous city prospect, with the river linking near and distant forms. London’s scale emerges through those relationships rather than through one isolated monument.
